Dina Skinner

For 15 years, Princeton Community Village (PCV) has been more than just housing for Dina Skinner and her daughter, Maiyin—it has been a home, a support system, and a source of opportunity. Dina was first drawn to Princeton while visiting her mother, captivated by its safety and friendly faces. Determined for a vibrant future for her then one-year-old daughter, she completed an application for affordable housing and was selected for a newly vacant apartment at PCV, where she seized the opportunity to move in without hesitation. Dina found that PCV embodied the best aspects of Princeton that initially charmed her: an idyllic, verdant setting with a close-knit community where neighbors know and support one another, and the opportunity for her daughter to attend a strong school district, benefiting from the excellent education and opportunities that came with it.

Dina fondly recalled the freedom and safety that allowed Maiyin to play outside during their early years at PCV—a stark contrast to the environment they had left behind. The cul-de-sac outside their townhouse became a place of childhood joy, watched over by fellow caring parents who knew each other’s names and children. Dina credits Maiyin’s school teachers, too, as active community members who are deeply invested in their students, recognizing and nurturing their unique talents. She reflected, “My daughter is nice, considerate, and thoughtful, and I think raising her in this community has a lot to do with that.”

The true strength of the community became evident in 2020 when Dina underwent a major health crisis that necessitated deeper support. PCV’s social services coordinator connected her with vital resources and stayed in contact with Dina’s mother, while neighbors provided meals during recovery— a kindness that continues today. Through it all, Maiyin thrived. As she readied herself for college, she studied diligently and pursued and won scholarships, including those from NAHMA and JAHMA. Recently, Maiyin completed her first semester as a student at Rider University on the Dean’s List, a testament to the opportunities her environment helped unlock.

Dina’s message to fellow residents is clear: engage with neighbors, build relationships, and take part in the wealth of experiences available. For her and Maiyin, PCV has been more than affordable housing—it has been the foundation for a brighter future and a model for what is possible with community.
